WELCOME SILENT
Sato Visits Melbourne
(N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 13. The Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Eisaku Sato, and his wife landed in Melbourne today to a colourful, flag-waving welcome that was completely silent.
Nearly 200 Japanese, many of them women in colourful national costume, and each alternately waving Japanese and Australian flags, were waiting to greet the party. The only sound as Mr and Mrs Sato came down the steps of the Japan Airlines DCB was the clicking of press cameras.
Cheering is not a Japanese custom.
Mr Sato and his wife then left for the 10-mile drive to the city, where Mr Sato was officially welcomed at the Town Hall by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne.
Mr Sato then paid a short visit to Government House to meet the Governor, Sir Rohan Delacombe, and Lady Delacombe, before meeting members of the Japanese community in a city hotel. Mr Sato will return to Sydney later today and is scheduled to leave for New Zealand tomorrow morning.
