MILITARY SERVICE

Russia Cuts Period

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) MOSCOW, Oct. 13. Defence Minister, Marshal Andrei Grechko, yesterday cut the basic period of military service in Russia by one year. He told the Supreme Soviet that the move was made possible by the tremendous changes in equipment and capabilities of the armed forces In recent years. The strike force of strategic rocket troops and anti-air-craft defence troops, he said, was “colossal and incomparable.”

He said the Government was reducing the basic term of military service from three to two years in the Army and Air Force, and from four to three years in the Navy and frontier units.

The marshal did not say if the changes would reduce the over-all size of the armed forces—now believed to number about 3.5 m men hut some observers believed this could be a result of the law. One reason for the cut was believed to be a growing manpower shortage holding up many construction projects.
