PLANS FOR FRIGATE
tfi Z. Press Association} WELLINGTON, Oct 12. But for the deterioration in New Zealand’s overseas exchange earnings, the fourth frigate for the Navy would have been ordered and the defence White Paper programme would have been adhered to, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said to a deputation from the Returned Services Association this morning.
Mr Holyoake said the Government hoped that there would be no gaps between the returning of the hired frigate Blackpool and the bringing into service of the fourth frigate, yet to be ordered, or between the withdrawal of the Canberras and the introduction of new combat aircraft. He said that the Cabinet had not received a recommendation on the combat aircraft to replace the Canberras.
