Most Drivers Sitting On Seat Belts

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) announced today that Government regulations requiring new cars to be fitted with safety belts were being frustrated by motorists not wearing the belts.

“Safety belts are of no use whatever if drivers and

passengers only sit on them.” he said.

According to a survey conducted recently by the Transport Department, 33 per cent of the cars checked were fitted with belts—but less than 17 per cent of the drivers were wearing them. The survey was conducted at Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Mr Gordon said the 1963 survey showed that 47 per cent of motorists wore seat belts.

“It is rather frustrating for the Government to bring tn regulations to protect motorists—and then find its efforts

are. negated because motorists do not cooperate,” he said. I

“They do not see figures that show that nearly 60 per cent of car fatalities may not have occurred if safety belts had been worn.”
