Northcote
Sir,—l agree with “Daniels Road” that the “Name Your District” poll, sponsored by the North Papanui Co-ordimt-ing Committee, is unwarranted, and that the traditional place names should be retained for this area. Four
of the committee’s suggested names are characterless neologisms, and quite unacceptable (i.e., Caselwood, Clearview, Northpark, Redpark). The fifth, Redwood, has some merit, but I am sure that the
resident who planted the tree had no qualms about living in Styx. Why not keep to Papanui, North Papanui, Styx and Marshland, and restrict Northcote to that area west of the North road and bounded by Northcote road and Tuckers road? Finally, I would question whether Daniels road is in Northcote, as your correspondent seems to imply. It would be interesting to have a ruling from the Geographic Board on this.—Yours, etc., GRIMSEYS ROAD. August 30, 1967.
