D.D.T. MIX PERMITS

No Great Rush

Applications for permits to use oiled D.D.T. wetmix to treat fields against porina and grass grub are now being received by the Department of Agriculture in Christchurch. According to the department’s senior fields supervisor (Mr A. R. Dingwall) the Christchurch office had received a number of inquiries but only one completed form was in the office by noon yesterday.

Mr Dingwall said significant numbers of applications from North Canterbury farmers were not expected until about January or February. This was because of the compulsory eight-week withholding period during which stock could not be grazed on treated pastures. Mr Dingwall said not many farmers could spare pastures from grazing at present. They would probably apply to use the oiled mix when they were closing areas for hay and seed production in the autumn. This would still provide ample time to control new generations of the pests.
