Whitebait Ban Risk
(N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH, Aug. 6. If the coming West Coast whitebait season follows recent patterns the Marine Department will seriously consider closed seasons in 1968 and 1969. “If the current season is another poor one this could bring about two closed seasons in 1968-69,” said Mr P. Blanchfield, member of Parliament for Westland, yesterday.
He said that reports from experts had gone to the Marine Department, and he believed current thinking in Wellington was that unless there was a marked improvement in this season's catch the department would take the course urged upon it for several years.
