Student Drowns In Bid To Save Boat

Kerry Thorn, aged 19, of Dalkeith, Port Chalmers, the son of Mr J. S. Thorn, Mayor of Port Chalmers.
The youth was one of a party of young people who were spending the week-end at Queenstown.
A dinghy was pushed on to the beach ready for some of the party to go for a row, but while Kerry Thorn returned to his father’s holiday house to get the rowlocks for it the dinghy drifted out from the shore, and was about 60 yards out when he started to swim out after it
He had swum about 30 yards when he became cramped in the cold water.
Another member of the party, Kenneth Barry Wood, of Dunedin, a 23-year-old student swam out to save his friend.
He readied him, but was unable to bold him and was forced to return to the beach, where he collapsed.
A skin-diver, working from a launch, recovered the body at 5 pan.
