University Council

Sir,—l assure Simon Nathan and others concerned about the recent decision of the university council not to include a student representative in its ranks that there are a number of students who will not allow the matter to rest there. At the recent halfannual general meeting of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association, a vote overwhelmingly in favour of student representation on the council was again passed, and the executive was called upon to make approaches to the

Government on this matter. Should this course of action receive no satisfactory response, then it has been further suggested that the students’ Association give official backing to a particular candidate for the next elections by the Court of Convocation, when the graduates of the university send their representatives to council. This is a university for students—and student opinion must not be excluded from the governing council.—Yours, etc., PAUL H. GROCOTT. August 4, 1967.
