THE NEW LONDON BRIDGE.—A drawing of the proposed six-lane structure costing £3,300,000. Although still perfectly safe, the old London Bridge is settling into the river bed at the rate of ½in each year. The main reason for building the new bridge is that the old one is overtaxed as one of the main arteries into the heart of London; during each morning and evening rush-hour, it carries about 25,000 pedestrians and 2750 vehicles.
