Fewer Employed In Manufacturing

WELLINGTON, August 3. There was a 2 per cent drop in the number of persons employed in manufacturing in the June quarter compared with the same period last year, the quarterly survey of trading conditions taken by the Manufacturers’ Federation has shown.

The survey showed a 10 per cent reduction in overtime, a slightly lower volume of sales by manufacturers in all districts except Otago and Southland, and a 5 per cent drop in forward orders.

The most seriously affected industrial group surveyed was the electrical appliance industry with a 10 per cent fall in sales, an 11 per cent drop in forward orders, a 6 per cent fall in staff and a 16 per cent reduction In overtime. At the same time, stocks increased 13 per cent Engineering firms and

manufacturers of building materials also suffered reductions in staff, sales, and forward orders. Food and apparel sales were a little higher than last year.
