PROTECTION BY U.S.
Report Denied By Lee
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, July 3. A spokesman for the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, has denied a newspaper report that Mr Lee had said in London that he would reject United States protection, even if Britain quit Asia completely. The spokesman said he was authorised by the Prime Minister to state that the report, purporting to be what Mr Lee had told a private meeting of Labour Party backbenchers two days ago, was “a complete distortion of what he said.”
According to the report, Mr Lee had said that a British pull-out from Singapore was wrong in principle and unwise In method, that Britain was unshaken in its plans to speed the withdrawal, and that Singaporeans could not go the way of the Australians and would reject the protection of America, even if Britain quit Asia completely.
