Advice On School Cert. Wanted

Concrete rulings on the school certificate examinations next year are wanted by the Hillmorton High School board. The headmaster (Mr P. W. Murdoch) said last evening that nothing official had been heard from the Education Department since last November when proposed changes were mooted.

A great deal of organisation for next year would have to be done in the next few weeks, Mr Murdoch told the board. Textbooks would have to be ordered soon and staffing determined by August. “We know nothing apart from what we have read in the newspapers,” he said. The chairman (Mr G. A. Johnstone) asked about the recent meeting in Wellington of 130 objecting principals. It had been said that they would not work with the proposed

new examination and that had delayed firm decision, he said. Mr Murdoch said he did not attend that meeting but thought newspaper reports might not have done full justice to the discussions. He understood the meeting was divided. When someone asked how many secondary schools the 130 represented, Miss R. F. C. Tyndall said she thought about 60 per cent.
