FIRE AT AVIARY
Some Birds Released
A lean-to shed, at 32 Pitcairn crescent, was almost completely destroyed by fire and an aviary, at 34 Pitcairn crescent, was slightly damaged. The fire occurred about 4.52 p.m. on Saturday.
Mr G. A. Hill, of 34 Pitcairn crescent, said that because of the fire he had had to release six canaries, worth about £l3, from the aviary. Two of the birds were seen in a tree in the rear of the yard yesterday morning but they had been unable to catch them, he said. Two others had been returned by two small girls. The canaries were not marked or ringed and he would be very pleased to have them back, he said. Forty budgerigars in an adjacent section of the aviary were not released and came to no harm, he said. The shed was on the property of Mr L. J. Holland.
