Whakamoa Picked For Hastings

Whakamoa is se-. lected to win the Te Mata Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting tomorrow.

Whakamoa has run his best races at Hastings. Twelve months ago he won the Winter Handicap then finished third in the Te Mata Handicap on the second day. Tomorrow Whakamoa. which ran Shogun to a nose last Saturday, will meet the Winter Handicap winner on 3 jib better terms. Fans, which has gained an exasperating sequence of minor placings, mainly as a result of his habit of getting well back early in his races will also have solid backing. Surf Boy could take beating. Others which must be respected are Recharge, Royal Red, Tinsel and the last start winner, Sparkling Maid. In the seven-furlong Longlands Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, the brilliant hack graduate Royal Theme is selected to win.

Last week, Royal Theme

won the seven-furlong Clifton Hack Handicap by five lengths from Giant Size, carrying 8-9. He was not hurried over the last 100 yards, but his time of Imin 27 2-ssec was the same as recorded by Kathey’s Son in the open sprint. On that assessment, Royal Theme, with 21b above the minimum, must be a great prospect this week. If he is ridden by an apprentice, as is expected, Dunraven should again go well. He carried his weight gallantly the first day, just losing to Kathey’s Son. Autobe is due for a win after three successive minor placings, and Backfire and Golden Summit ran well enough last week to be worth following.
