The Italian Supreme Court today upheld an 80-day gaol sentence for manslaughter on Professor Patrizio Astorri, a surgeon who took out a woman’s kidney in 1962 without knowing that she did not have another one. Professor Astorri, who had paid damages to the patient’s family before the case began, will not have to serve the sentence because of a recent amnesty.
