U.S. Holiday Toll Record

(N.Z. Press Ann.—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 1. Accidents on United States highways killed 606 people during the Memorial Dey holiday last week-end. It was a record toil for the first holiday of the summer season, but lower than the National Safety Council had feared—between 650 and 750. Also, 138 were drowned, 32 died in plane crashes, and 111 in miscellaneous accidents for an over-all toll of 887. The previous Memorial Day traffic toll record, of 542, was set in last year’s three-day holiday period.
