Bookings For Holiday Transport Heavy

Accommodation for air, sea and rail transport from Christchurch during the Queen’s Birthday holiday period was yesterday reported to be fairly heavy. The National Airways Corporation will run 31 special flights and one charter flight over the holiday period which begins today and ends on Monday night Eighty-five per cent

of available accommodation on all flights has been booked, said an airline spokesman yesterday. Today N.A.C. will run 273 flights, including 35 through Christchurch. The darts club of a city hotel has chartered an aircraft to go to Masterton and bring its members back on Monday. Tomorrow there will be 16 aircraft through Christchurch while on Sunday only limited services will run. On Monday 33 flights, including 14 specials, will be handled through Christchurch. A scenic flight over the Southern Alps and lakes has been booked for Sunday by a Young Farmers* Club. If it goes, it will be the first scenic flight of the winter. Bookings on the inter-island ferries today and on Monday are very heavy, said a spokesman for the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd. He said that the only bookings which could now be made were those resulting from cancellations. The demand for accommodation on a special excursion to Arthur’s Pass on Monday has been fairly heavy, said a spokesman for the Railways Department yesterday. Monday’s excursion will be the firs* of the season’s “snow expresses” to the pass. This winter the excursions will all be on Saturday rather than as in the past on Sundays. This is being done to keep costs down.
