FRENCH TENNIS

Top Three Beaten (’N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—CopgrlphO PARIS. Three of the world’s best women tennis players suffered surprise defeats in a dramatic quarter-final round of the French championships on Wednesday. The American, Mrs B. J.King, the Wimbledon champion, Mrs A. Jones (Britain), holder of the French title, and the Brazilian, Miss M. E. Bueno, holder of the United States title, were all swept out of the event for which they had been seeded one, two and three respectively. Mr* King was the first to go, beaten by Miss A. van ZyL the 21-year-old South African, by 6-2, 5-7, 64. Then it was the turn of Mrs Jones, who was bustled out by the rising young Australian, Miss K. Melville. The 19-year-old Australian, making her second world tour, won 04, 64, 8-6, after collecting onto 13 points in the first set. Then, Miss Bueno, playing on the centre court for the first time, went down against the 24-year-old French girl, Miss F. Durr, whose unorthodox but remarkably accurate play enabled her to win 5-7, 6-1, 64. These upsets have left Miss L. R, Turner, the 24-year-old Australian number one, a strong favourite to add the French title to the Italian championship she won last month. Miss Turner, unbeaten in six European tournaments this season, beat the West German, Miss H. Schultze, 7-5, 6-2, and will meet Miss van Zyl in the semi-finals. Miss Melville will play Miss Dun.
