Driving Age Study
(N.Z. Press Association! AUCKLAND, June 1. Teen-age ownership of ears was taping investigated, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) told the Papakura Rotary Club tonight. A member had asked what the Transport Department waa doing about teen-age driven. He said teen-agers had four times as many accidents as any other age group. Mr Gordon said the question of whether young people should be allowed to own vehicles was being studied. The minimum age at
which a,Mcence could be obtained was entwined with the school-leaving age. Boys leaving school to work for farmers or as motor mechanics, for example, must be able to drive as part of their employment. It was significant that in countriea where the minimum age waa higher so was the age at which most were involved in aecidente.
In New Zealand, drivers of 18 and 19 had the moat accidents. In countries where the minimum age was, say 18, those of 21 to 23 had the most accidents.
