Cold May Weather

Weather in Christchurch in May was wetter and cloudier than usual with two unusually cold southerly changes—one on May 15 and 16 bringing 2in to 3in of snow to suburbs near the Port Hills and considerably more on‘ the hills themselves, and the other on May 30 and 31 again bringing snow to higher parts of Banks Peninsula, says the monthly summary from the Weather Office at Christchurch airport. Temperatures were a little above average because of several very mild days early in the 'month. The highest temperature was 72 degrees on May 5 (74 at the Botanic Gardens). The mean maximum temperature was 58 degrees and the mean minimum was 39 degrees. Frosts were not as hard as usual, the hardest being four degrees. Rain fell on 14 days for a total of 3.24 in (average for May 2.85 in). The heaviest daily fall was ,66in on May 26. Sunshine for the month was 117 hours, compared with the average of 129 hours. South-westerly winds predominated, with the highest gusts of 53 miles an hour on May 11.
