BRILLIANT PLAYING

University Recital The University Hall was crowded yesterday for the first lunch-hour recital of the winter term when Mr Maurice Till played the Polonaise in A Flat and 24 Preludes by Chopin. The Polonaise was played with brilliant tone which flashed forth particularly in the extreme treble. Mr Till interpreted the work as a tale of gallantry and romance. The second section suggested the wild ride of horsemen bent on attack. Lyrically poetic playing provided charming contrast which led back to the excitement and -grandeur of the first section and forged on to the triumphant climax. In his interpretation of the 24 Preludes Mr Till made each a glowing miniature (in length but not in content, of course) offering subtle contrasts to its fellows. Mellow recollections, glittering cascades of delicate sounds, poignant musings, and joyous moments of triumph as heights were scaled and winds blew freely with bracing tang, all came with poised and polished utterance in unforced tonal colourings and the completely clear phrasing. Both in technique and in imaginative interpretation the performance was a brilliant tour de force.
