Jonathan Swift Tercentenary
Two New Zealanders have been attending a symposium at Trinity College, Dublin, to celebrate the tercentenary of Jonathan Swift Professor G. F. Simkin, professor of economics at the University of Auckland, and Mr C. D. Doyle, senior lecturer in English at the university, were among the 100 scholars from throughout the world. The symposium was the main event in the tercentenary programme which would continue until November with exhibitions, plays and special radio and television features. The programme will conclude with a commemorative service in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, at which a special oration will be given by Denis Johnston, the noted Irish playwright and authority on Swift Swith. the author of “Gulliver’s Travels” was born in No. 7, Hoey’s Court, Dublin on November 30, 1667, near the deanery of St Patrick’s Cathedral where he died in 1745.
