Twiggy May Cause N.Z. Wool Slump
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, May 31. The skin-and-bone look Inspired and perpetuated by the fashion puppet Twiggy is expected to cost New Zealand wool growers millions of pounds this year, says the “Daily Mirror.” The superlative New Zealand fleece is apparently considered just too heavy for today’s swinging styles. The unhappy commercial truth bad been underlined by the managing director of the International Wool Secretariat, Mr William Vines. The newspaper said Mr Vines had said: “The skinny look is one of the causes of a near calamitous position in the New Zealand wool industry. “Of course, the squeeze is also to blame, as well as an abundance of cheap Argentine wool. “But without doubt this new fashion vogue is a chief factor.” Mr Vines had estimated that the value of this year’s New Zealand wool exports
would drop £4O million to £B3 million. The “Daily Mirror” says: “Forget Oxfam, feed Twiggy.” (Oxfam is an Oxford committee for famine relief.)
