Driving Offences

Sir, — A young man was convicted of reckless driving which consisted of travelling at speeds up to 75 m,p.h. through the centre of the city, travelling through a compulsory stop and red light, ignoring the siren and flashing red light of a patrol car in hot pursuit, carrying out the whole manoeuvre without any lights, and nearly colliding with an oncoming car. The Magistrate saw fit to cancel the driver's licence for only one year and fined him £25. This seems inconsistent with a recent case wherein a driver was convicted for driving at a speed of 58 m.pJi. in a 30-mile limit over approximately 50 yards in favourable conditions, the penalty being one year's cancellation and a £l5 fine. Will the points system not accentuate the injustices that so frequently occur, as in these cases?—Yours, etc, BRITISH JUSTICE. May 24, 1967.
