Brass Bands

Sir,—lt is understood that the Band of the New Zealand Army has a very high standard, both in music and drill. If this is so, why did they not enter in the National Brass Band Championships? New blood is definitely needed in the A grade.—Yours, etc, BRASS BAND REVOLUTIONARY. May 29, 1967. [Lieutenant J. D. Carson, conductor of the New Zealand Army Band, replies: “The Band of the New Zealand Army cannot compete as a band in national competition under the present rules of the New Zealand Brass Band Association. These rules categorise Army bandsmen as professionals and therefore prohibit the participation of the band. Army bandsmen may, however, take part in national brass band championships as members of local civilian bands. Under these arrangements 22 Army bandsmen took part in the band competitions this year.”]
