CEMETERIES AT AKAROA

Two In “Very Bad Condition” The state of the Roman Catholic and public cemeteries at Akaroa had become very bad, the chairman of the Akaroa County Town Committe (Cr. W. R. Dewey) told the county council. He said the Roman Catholic cemetery was so bad that

it was almost beyond the members of the Church to tackle.

His comments arose during discussion of a letter from the Roman Catholic parish committee asking with whom they should negotiate to reach a common policy on the maintenance of the cemetery.

Mr Dewey said the church was anxious to clean up and keep the cemetery in a-pre-sentable state. The parish priest (Rev. T. Cloher) had already told him that the church would contribute to any joint programme aimed at maintaining the cemeteries.

The council agreed that the cemeteries, which adjoin each other, should be fenced so that stock could be used to control growth. The council agreed to pay one third of the cost of the fencing of the Roman Catholic and public cemeteries. The Anglican portion is already fenced and in good condition.
