No Price For Tobacco

(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, May 26. Manufacturing companies were unable to buy the 196667 tobacco crop until the Price Tribunal fixed the average price to be paid, said a spokesman for the manufacturers, in Wellington today. The companies regretted the delay in buying, but normally the price was announced well before now. Growers had been asked to submit price applications for this season by last October However, the Tobacco Growers’ Federation had not submitted its application until April. Repeatedly over the last few weeks manufacturers have impressed on the Trade Practices and Prices Division the urgency of the situation, but the hearing had been delayed until May 30, said the spokesman. It was sincerely hoped that a decision could be reached soon, so that buying could begin immediately.
