TRANSPORT BY ROAD

Extension Of

Limit Sought

The Canterbury-Westland division of the National Party wants the Government to extend the limit of 40 miles on road transport in competition with the railways. At the division’s annual conference Ashburton delegates called for urgent considerations of the removal of controls as a means of saving labour expenses and using road transport facilities fully. Mr P. L. Sanders said that some goods on short rail hauls were handled as many as four times before final delivery. Mrs A. G. Fraser (Rangiora) said the present restriction to 40 miles was detrimental to the country. During the recent rail strike private transport firms had proved how efficiently they could move goods. . Another delegate said that the present controls were impeding the progress of the country. Private firms realised that beyond 80 miles they could not compete favourably with the railways. Some had found to their regret that they could not compete with the railways in carrying stock.

A.A.C. Membership.—Membership of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) is now 64,830, the assocation’s council was told last evening, when 410 members were elected.
