TOWING SPEEDS

Limits To Be Investigated

Overseas speed limits for vehicles towing trailers and caravans will be investigated by the general manager of the Automobile Association (Canterbury), Mr E. S. Palliser. The report of the council’s national motoring and traffic committee said the Wairarapa association had suggested that the present speed limit be made advisory. A letter from the A.A. (Canterbury) Caravan Club said the club’s committee favoured a 50 m.p.h. limit for caravans. Mr Palliser had said the present 40 m.p.h. limit did seem too low. Mr N. F. Greenslade had said vehicles towing impeded traffic on main roads at peak periods. He favoured an increase in the limit but felt more emphasis should then be given to the roadworthiness of the towed vehicles. Mr E. C. Champion said he wondered if the 50 m.p.h. limit were adopted the 5 m.p.h. speed differential might be too little, bearing in mind the distance required to pass a vehicle towing a caravan or trailer. It would be harder to pass if the vehicle and trailer were doing 50 m.p.h.
