POOR PLAY IN ALL BASKETBALL GAMES

This season’s Canterbury Basketball Association’s senior competition play has never been of an exceptionally high standard, but usually there is at least one game of a sufficient standard to exhibit excellent basketball. In the fifth round games on Saturday, ther was not even one game worthy of attention. Goal accuracy was poor, ball handling was untidy, and combination play seemed non-existent.

New Brighton defeated Sacred Heart in .i game that had rare moments of excitement, Hagley B convincingly defeated St. Nicholas, and Technical defeated Teachers’ College in one of the worst games this season. Hagley A had a bye. Results; — New Brighton 41, Sacred Heart 29. Hagley B 29, St. Nicholas 13. Technical 38, Teachers’ College 20. Competition points after five rounds are:—New Brighton 10, Technical 8, Hagley A 4, Sacred Heart 3, Teachers' College 2, Hagley B 3, St. Nicholas 0. Easy Win New Brighton took the early lead, gaining six goals to Sacred Heart’s two, and in spite of efforts by Sacred Heart, New Brighton managed to keep a strong lead. Sacred Heart had

a patch of efficient goal shooting in the first half, but it could not hold rebounding goal shots against the New Brighton defenders, C. Holland and M. Neiman.

Sacred Heart found itself in an even worse position as New Brighton's combinational play consolidated, and by half-time the score was 20-12.

Neither team was playing well, and the ball frequently went the length of the field three or four times before a goal was taken. New Brighton managed to gain from this, however, having a stronger defence and more determined goal shoots. Sacred Heart was less organised in feeding its goal, and, because of this, often lost goals to New Brighton’s interception. As the game progressed, the Sacred Heart defences, J. Pooley and N. Pringle, established themselves more strongly, and took every opportunity afforded, but the accuracy of New Brighton’s shoots, J. Buchanan and L. Woodhead, did not give Sacred Heart many opportunities

Bail handling in both teams was poor, and although Sacred Heart goal shoots, J, Jones and J. Harnett, improved their shooting, centre play seemed to deteriorate, keeping the ball from the shoots.

Although New "Brighton was playing reasonably well. Sacred Heart lost more convincingly than they perhaps should have done. The team was comparatively strong both at goal and defence, and the centre; C. Daly, was playing well. However, the lack of combination from centre to goal was enough to spoil Sacred Heart’s game. At Bottom St. Nicholas, in the lowest position in the competition this season, managed to keep up with Hagley B in the early stages of the game. However, as the game progressed, St. Nicholas had very little chance of holding the stronger Hagley team. It managed to keep the margin small for a while, but once Hagley got ahead „to 13-5 St. Nicholas had no chance. St. Nicholas, although always a plucky team, has little chance of competing with any effect in senior games. This is unfortunate, as the team has some individually good players, particularly S. Jones, the captain, who has been nominated for selection to the Canterbury team. St. Nicholas has been plagued with difficulties this season, having four new members, and having lost two prospective players to Hagley A, and It would require an extremely rigid training schedule to get it to senior competition standard. Worst Play In the final game of the afternoon, play was at its worst. Technical, one of the competition leaders, played its worst game this season, and the play was frequently well below senior standards. Teachers' College, although missing goals frequently, was often saved by its atrong defences, S. McLaughlin and J. Eddie. Its goal shoots, although missing goals frequently, saved themselves by following the ball and saving the ball for another goal attempt. Even in the early stages of play, the game was beginning to fail on both sides. Bali handling was poor, and the ball went from one end of the court to the other without a • successful goal shot. The game was further slowed down by technical errors which caused stops in play. A. Boeliee, for Technical, always strong at centre, played an exceptionally fine defensive game, and saved her team many time* with excellent interceptions. J. McKay, one of the strongest player in the Teachers’ College side, and captaining the team for the first time this season, was quite unintimidated by her Technical opposition, and saved her team many times with accurate jumping interceptions. After half-time, Technical carried its lead well forward from 20 r 12 to 23-13. Its game was extremely faulty, but it managed to recover from this, to carry its score higher. In the final stages of the game, play deteriorated horribly. Neither team seemed to be playing seriously at all. Balls were continually dropped or passed wildly well outside the court, and goal accuracy was almost non-existent. At one stage the game was completely ludicrous. The ball, in Technical’s circle, changed hands about five times, while goals and passes were missed. The ball was finally juggled into the goal, but previous play indicated that this was more by accident than from any intent.
