FASHIONS IN TOKYO

(By SUE DAWSON, a former staff reporter of “The Press)

It is the beginning of summer in Tokyo now and at Maxim’s de Paris in the Sony building on the Ginza they are preparing a woman’s world for it . . . so I sat forward on the edge of my chair at the Seibu fashion show, featuring Ives Saint Laurent’s spring fashion designs.

Seibu is a large Tokyo department store and it was introducing 33 of the famous French designer's creations including two originals, which it had purchased. Whether you like vest suits, ensembles of suit and vest with man-tailored shirt and tie and the shortening skirt, at least this fashion show could never be accused of dull designs.

Very bright colours were emphasised and these were most effective when applied to the simple feminine line. Reverting to the vest suits, seven of these were modelled and all were either in checks or pin stripes with wide polka dot ties.

One masculine pant suit featured bell-bottomed slacks with a pure white silk shirt

The tribal appearance was accentuated by surprising 12inch high hair pieces designed by Alexandre.

The African devil-mask, motif was stressed on shoes and sandals with leather straps to secure them.
