Y-Boys Lose Lead

Canterbury University A came from behind with two minutes left to beat Christchurch Y Boys, 42-38, in an A grade invitation men’s basketball match at Hokitika on Saturday. The match, part of a special indoor sports evening to mark the official opening of the Westland High School's gymnasium, could have gone either way in the closing minutes. Y-Boys began badly but came back into the reckoning in the second spell with some outstanding team work and seven minutes from time, swept into the lead. However, J. Culliford saved the day for University A with lovely hook shots in the closing minutes. University led 20-12 at half-time. Scores:— University A 42 (P. Stlgley 12. J. Stead 10, J. Culliford 8. M. Askew 6, H. Kawaguchi 4, G. Williams 2), Y-Boys A 38 (K. Williams 14. R. Dew 14, D. Toellner 6, T. Reece 2, D. Pahl 2).
