Scoring Error Mars Men’s Basketball

High School Old Boys would be justified in claiming they Were robbed after their game against University A in the eighth round of the Canterbury Men’s Basketball Association’s A grade competition at Cowles Stadium on Saturday.

After leading almost throughout the game, the scoreboard showed that Old Boys had won by 32 points to 31 at the final whistle. / However, when the official seoresheet was checked by the referees it was found that the correct score was 33-32 in favour of University, and the students had maintained their unbeaten record. Evidently the person on the scoreboard had missed a field goal scored by University midway through the second half. According to the scoreboard, High School Old Boys led 28-25 with four minutes to go, and were still ahead 32-27 with dess than two minutes left With the score 32-31 in their favour, after two quick baskets by University, and only 30 seconds of play remaining. Old Boys quite sensibly chose to retain control of the ball and prevent University from scoring again. This they successfully accomplished, but then came tragedy when the scoresheet was checked. In the other games University B had a comfortable victory over a depleted Burnham side by 51 points to 21; and Y.M.c.A. was untroubled to beat Bex, 50-18. Competition points after eight rounds are:— University A 14, Y.M.C.A. 12, University B 10. Y-Boys 5, H. 5.0.8. 5, Burnham 1, Rex 1. Dull Game UHIVERSITY A 33: J. Stead 10. J. CuHlford 8, D. de Lisle 7, M. Askew 5, G. Williams 3. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS 32: G. Orchard 16, A. Hounsell 10, K. Luxton 4, M. Gleason 2. Old Boys led, 14*13, at halftime and there was never more than five points between the teami. In spite of the close score the game was not exciting, with both teams throwing wild passes and often being recalled for minor infringements. Stead was outstanding for University, gathering rebounds from both backboards. He was top scorer for his side. His defensive play in subduing the high-scoring Old Boys centre, Hounsell, was also of great value. CuHlford achieved some success with strong drives and accurate set shots, but lapsed on defence at times.

For Old Boys, Orchard had his best game of the season but was helped by defensive errors by University. Milligan failed to score, but hte fine passing en-

abled Orchard to score his points. Quiet Match UNIVERSITY ■ 81: W. Smith 16, J. Uttley 12, B. Heppenstail 8, J. Riley 5, P. Sharp 4, B. Strong 3, C. Morris 3. BURNHAM 21; D. de Felice 9, D. Watson 6, B. Rose 4, H. Schmidt 2. Burnham was handicapped by the absence of its representative players, Costello and Keetly, and was not able to contain the scoring ability of Smith, Uttley and the other students. De Felice tried hard for Burnham and was rewarded with top score for his side. Both teams seemed lethargic, and play did not rise to great heights. The play of Strong and Morris, both representative players, was disappointing. Neither has played a reaMy good game this season. Held Lead

Y.M.C.A. 50: D. Rattray 14. P. Ross 13, M. Clements 10, R. Entwistle 6, A. Riley 4, D. Symonds 3 REX 18: P. Fox 4, D. Verey 4, N. Saunders 4, J. McEvoy 2, K. Murray 2, M. Allison 2. Y.M.C.A. led, 21-6 at half-time and was untroubled to increase this advantage in the second spell.

Most of the Rex players attempted far too much dribbling and were continually deprived of possession of the ball by mistakes or interceptions. The even distribution of points among the team members was perhaps an indication of their capabilities. The young Y.M.C.A. players, Rattray and Clements, scored some good baskets, and were helped by accurate feeding and passing from Entwistle, playing at centre. Ross produced another good display, shooting accurately, guarding well, encouraging his younger teammates and displaying his superb physical fitness. Symonds showed continued Improvement, with some fine work on defence and clearing the ball from his own endline. Lower Grades Senior Reserve.-—Christchurch B.H.S.
