Woman Dies After Plunge Off Bridge

A 23-year-old woman died on the way to the North Shore Hospital, Auckland, on Saturday afternoon after her car plunged down the side of the Pine Valley road bridge, near Silverdale, and into a creek, the Press Association reports.

Four young men and a traffic officer from Orewa dived into the creek and attempted to free the woman from the submerged car.

They got her head above the water and, while two of them attempted to revive her with heart massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the others freed her legs from the wreckage. She was

Died In Ambulance A motor-scooter rider died soon after his machine and a car collided on the HastingsHavelock North highway at 6.25 p.m. on Saturday. He was Robert Bruce Wallace, aged 25, married, with two children, of Lipscotnbe crescent, Havelock North.

Mr Wallace was rushed to hospital by ambulance but died as it arrived at the hospital.

Youth Killed A youth was killed and four taken to hospital after two cars collided on the corner of Mary and Yarrow streets, Invercargill, soon after midnight on Saturday. The dead youth was Christopher John Thom, aged 17, of 141 Margaret street, Invercargill. He died from head injuries about half an hour after he was admitted to the Kew Hospital. Hit By Car A pedestrian who was struck by a car in Domain road, Whakatane, about 6.30 p.m on Friday, died in the Whakatane Hospital about an hour later. Anglers Drowned Two anglers were drowned at Lake Taupo on Saturday. They were Gladstone Henry Bell, aged 59, married, district senior inspector of education, Norton road, Hastings, and Graham George Robinson, aged 44, married, assistant inspector, Homewood road, Khandallah, Wellington. They were drowned in 75 feet of water at the mouth of the Tauranga-Taupo river. They left the main party of a dozen school inspectors during a fishing week-end at the lake. Skin-divers recovered Mr Gladstone’s body but there is no trace of Mr Robinson. Boy’s Body Found The body of a nine-year-old boy who fell from the Castlecliff wharf on May 20 was recovered on Saturday afternoon. He was Graham John Tennent, of 35 Hood street. Castlecliff.

An Inquest was opened later by Mr E. J. Crotty, J.P., and was adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been given. Body In Scrub . The police yesterday found the body of an Auckland man who had been missing since May 18. The body was in scrub country near Walpu .Cove. He was Robert Thompson Haddon, aged 44, a commercial traveller, of Riddell road, Glendowie. The police last week found at the cove a car which had been hired from an Auckland firm. In it were samples of goods. An inquest will be opened before the Whangarei Coroner today.
