NO HASTY DECISION’
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 26.
The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said today that the Government had no intention of making any hasty decision on applying all or any part of the recommendations of the Molyneux report.
He said there had been criticism of the report and adoption of its recommendations might mean domination by the Conference Lines. “I wish to assure all those organisations likely to be affected by the application of the Molyneux report, or any part of it; that the Government will seek to preserve local and sectional interests,” Mid Mr Gordon. He said the first step would
be to examine the findings of the Transport Commission, now reviewing the report
“No decision can be made until the commission’s findings are studied,” Mid the Minister. "MONOPOLY SOUGHT”
The objective of the Molyneux Report on cargo handing appeared to be to secure in advance a monopoly of container loading for the Conference Lines, Mr C. A Moore, the president of the Bay of Plenty Local Bodies Association, said in his report to the annual meeting in Tauranga today. “We have only a short time in which to prepare submissions on the report and we are dependent upon newspaper accounts of the Molyneux findings, as very few of the interested authorities have been able to secure copies of the actual report,” Mr Moore Mid. If container loading proved as efficient as it was credited
to be New Zealand might be faced, in the future, with a reduction in the number of vessels and a consequent growth of monopolistic control, he Mid. "This could easily result in the raising of freight charges rather than their reduction, and tend to concentrate attention on the potential of air transport with its attendant savings in time and labour,” Mr Moore said.
