Inquiries Into Car Lease Agreements
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 26. The Department of Industries and Commerce was inquiring into motor lease-hire agreements, said the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) in Parliament today.
Mr R. J. Tizard (Lab., Pakuranga) cited an Auckland court case in which the defendant had agreed to pay £7OO over four years as lease charges on a car worth £325. He asked whether this agreement, and other similar agreements, contravened regulations on car sales finance.
Answering on behalf of the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall), Mr Shelton said that inquiries were still being made into this case.
The Department of Industries and Commerce had Investigated a similar case recently, but the evidence was not sufficient for the department to prosecute. In the Auckland case, the department’s district office had seen the firm concerned and was making full inquiries,
but so far had not obtained sufficient information for a full investigation, Mid Mr Shelton.
