HISTORIC VICTORY

Celtic Wins Cup Final (N.zY. A.‘Reuter—Copyright) LISBON. Glasgow Celtic made soccer history on Thursday by becoming the first British soccer club to win the European Champions' Cup. Splendid goals by the fullback. T. Gemmell, and the centre-forward, S. Chalmers, enabled Celtic to fight back from a goal down and beat Internaxionale Milan, 2-1. Although Celtic scored the winning goal with only six minutes to spare, its victory could not have been more thoroughly deserved. The Scottish club dominated Inter, twice winners of the cup, from beginning to end. Inter got a goal through its centre-forward, Mazzola, from a penalty after eight minutes, but from then on Celtic mounted almost constant pressure. The home-produced players under their manager, Mr J. Stein, had carried all before them in Scottish football this season—winning the League championship and the Scottish F.A.R. and League Cups—but the pundits thought they would not have the class to overcome Inter-Milan, the most successful club side in the world In recent years. The simple feet was that it was Inter which was outclassed, although it had seven players from the sides which won the European Cup in 1964 and UN. Celtic tore into the Italians like tigers, gained the midfield initiative, end hammered away at Sartl, in the Inter goal, fat N minutes.
