Atonement Made
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO, May 26. Japan is to give Malaysia two ocean-going ships to atone for its Second World War “blood debt” The Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunko Abdul Rahman, and the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Eisaku Sato, met today to formalise an agreement for the supply of the ships. In a joint statement after the meeting, the two leaders said they agreed this would be “a satisfactory settlement” of claims based on demands by the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Malaysia for compensation for atrocities committed by Japanese forces to Chinese in Malaya during the Second World Wait It was understood that the ships—both freighters—each will be no less than 10,000 tons.
