Woodville Horses Show Fitness

"The Press” Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH. Sound work by the J. A. Betts Memorial candidates, Fans, Jen Hai and Summer Flight, at Woodville yesterday brought all three into favour for the first leg of the Masterton double. Gayemana. Chesterman and Mark all schooled well in preBaration for the Hack and unters’ Steeplechase at Opaki while Harry Lauder and Sir Carl also pleased. Fans partnered Summer Flight in a splendid mile gallop. The stablemates clocked Imin 50sec with a little in reserve, taking Imin 21jsec for the last six furlongs and 42 2*ssec for the final three. Jen Hai ran over the same ground in Imin 49sec. He was assisted by Min Flicka and Free Pass, the latter joining in for the final three furlongs. Jen Hai was timed from the six in Imin 20 3-ssec, the final three in 40 3-ssec.

Harry Lauder dashed over five in Imin 4sec, taking 51 4-ssec for his last half and 38£sec for the final three. He ran right away from Comrade which will start a fresh campaign at Wanganui. Sir Carl, kept wide out on the track, recorded 52jsec for half a mile. He was accompanied by Happy Gift and Home Pride, which was well tack at the line. Sir Carl’s last three in 39sec should give him a good chance at Masterton.

Gayemana and Mark were schooled over country. They kept together for the last three fences, then Gayemana ducked inside the brush double and Joined Mark again to complete a serviceable round. Gayemana then carried on to jump another three fences, finishing up by clearing the double competently. Mark was inclined to jump a little slowly, but his was perhaps the better exhibition. Afterwards the horses worked separately over half a mile at a steady pace. Chesterman was convincing in a run over 10 fences. He jumped every one the same and now he appears a bright jpros* pect for the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Masterton on Saturday.
