MIGRATION STUDY
A grant of £lOOO from the New Zealand National Council of Churches is being used to assist a major study of internal migration in Latin America. Mr F. G. Heard, interchurch aid secretary to the council, said that Latin America was becoming a closer neighbour of New Zealand as the world shrank in size The survey was. being conducted especially in Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. In Brazil a skilled social worker was travelling through sections where migration was occurring, and informing churches and other organisations of the help needed for migrating families.
In Bolivia, preliminary studies of the great exodus of Bolivian workmen to northern Argentina had been completed, and orientation centres set up on the BoliviaArgentina border to help the migrants. The main concern of the study in Peru had been Indian populations which streamed to the towns and cities, especially Lima.
