RIG TUNNEL LOAD
Linkspan Of 50 Tons
The Christchurch-Lyttelton road tunnel was closed to traffic from 1 a.m. today while a ramp linkspan for the terminal of the LytteltonAuckland drive-on drive-off shipping services was taken to Lyttelton. It was expected that the tunnel would be closed for about threequarters of an hour. The linkspan, 80ft by 24ft and weighing 50 tons, was taken to the toll plaza yesterday. Some traffic lights and bollards were removed to allow it to go through the tunnel. Lamp-poles and signs at Lyttelton portal also had. to be removed.
The tunnel superintendent (Mr W. A. Wheldale) said that bigger and heavier loads had gone through the tunnel, but the ramp would be the most exacting. The load was 105 ft long and 24ft wide. The tunnel is 26ft wide at road level, but traffic lights protrude every 400 ft. The linkspan was moved on a five-axled articulated truck at the front and two separate bogies, each of three axles at the rear.
