FARMERS PROTEST
Milk Price In Canada (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) OTTAWA, May 25. Thousands of FrenchCanadian farmers tried to storm the doors of Parliament in Ottawa yesterday at the end of a 10,000-strong demonstration demanding better milk prices. Royal Canadian Mounted Police linked arms and formed a double rank to keep the chanting French-Canadian farmers from forcing the locked front doors of the Parliament Building. A window in the entrance door was broken and two others cracked as the crowd surged against the police lines chanting in French: “We want five-buck (dollar) milk.”
It was the biggest demonstration seen on Parliament Hill and probably the first time that the doors of Parliament have been locked against Canadians. No injuries or arrests have been reported.
The tension among the demonstrators eased only after a delegation was allowed in to meet Cabinet Ministers.
