Assurance Sought On Sugar Price
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 24. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) was asked in Parliament today for assurance that the price of sugar would not be increased in the next six months.
Mr P. Blanchfield (Lab., Westland) asked Mr .Marshall if he was watching the progressive rises in sugar prices overseas, and if he was taking steps to keep up stocks of sugar.
Mr Marshall said that although the present London daily price of £23 10s a ton was higher than the abnormally low prices prevailing in the latter part of 1966 and early this year, it was moderate compared with normal levels and less than a quarter of the peak reached in November, 1963.
“The buying of sugar and the level at which stocks in New Zealand are maintained are commercial decisions to be made by the New Zealand Sugar Company, Ltd., which carries the risks and is of course very closely in touch with market developments,” he said.
Mr Marshall replied to Mr Blanchfield’s request for an assurance that the price of sugar would not be increased by asking Mr Blanchfield in
turn for an assurance that the world price of sugar would not increase.
