Bishop Pyatt To Visit Chathams Next Month
When the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) visits the Chatham Islands at the end of June, the 50 Anglican families of the most isolated parish in the Christchurch Diocese will receive the first pastoral visit from their Bishop since 1954, and the first opportunity to attend Communion services in more than four months.
The former Bishop of Christchurch, the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren, visited the Chathams in H.M.N.Z.S. Hawea in 1954. The parish has been without a vicar since the beginning of the year. Mr J. C. Cottrell, the diocesan registrar, said yesterday that Bishop Pyatt expec-
ted to leave Christchurch in the Holmburn on June 26, and to return by dr on July 11. While in the Chathams he will be provided with accommodation and transport by the local people, and hopes to visit all Anglicans and other Church people. He will conduct Communion services, prepare people for Confirmation, and hold a Confirmation service. With the trip to the Chathams, Bishop Pyatt will have visited all 67 parishes within his diocese since his consecration on August 24 of last year. The Bishop of Aotearoa (the Rt. Rev. W. N. Panapa) visited the islands in 1959.
