Freedom Of Expression

Sir,—At first sight it would seem, with reference to the term Communist, that “Tolerance” is intolerant. Communism in its basic form means economic State control. The free world prefers limited State control. I?oth are within their rights. It is only in the international field that the word becomes provocative. Enemy nations unable to win in open warfare resort to treacherous distortion of words. To be referred to as Communists suits their book. It conceals the fact that they are using a war-time economy in peace time. In the international sphere the Communist becomes a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He is in reality not a Communist but an unmitigated aggressor and warmonger.—Yours,etc., T. M. SHAW. Westport, May 24, 1963. [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed., “The Press.”]
