Freedom Of Expression
Sir, —Only tolerance and co-operation between all classes can yield true progress. W. R. Squires and “A Student” can thank their stars they have freedom of expression, whether or not they have anything worth expressing. There is a backwoods ignorance in our midst of the true character of communism, which "A Student” complains is a swear word in America. Communism has supplied its own reasons for this; its harshly intolerant and selfrighteous, bigoted fanaticism has made its name a by-word for cruel and unnecessary guerrilla wars. It has spread the poisonous .plague of class warfare in New Zealand, and will impede our progress for years to come. While our folly of political strife and dissension goes on, Japan, Sweden,-West Germany, and Australia will leave us, like China, 50 years behind them in material, ■ cultural, and human progress.—Yours, etc, TOLERANCE. May 16, 1967.
