Britain And E.E.C.
Sir, —“L.G.W.” suggests that an economic community between the Commonwealth be started, but that would not be profitable to Britain, because many of the countries would be able to export to Britain, for example, much less than they could import from her. The British cannot live off cheese, butter and meat, wearing woollen clothes. Could “L.G.W.” explain why Britain should -be stuck with some of her socalled developed colonies and dominions so long after their foundation? If we cannot learn to become a little more self-supporting, we cannot expect other countries to keep on leaning down to help us up.—Yours etc. SOPHOCLES. May 20, 1967.
