Scholarship For Hamilton Girl

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, May 10. The Hamilton soprano, Malvina Major, has won the Frankstein Scholarship, which will give her a year’s study in opera in Germany. The news came by cable to her mother, Mrs V. Major, of Hamilton, this morning. “Malvina was invited to enter for the scholarship,” said Mrs Major. “We understand that she will go possibly to Austria and study at an opera house in Vienna.” Miss Major, now studying at the London Opera School, sought the advice of Mr James Robertson, a former conductor of the New Zealand National Orchestra, on whether to apply for the scholarship or not. “Mr Robertson told her that it would be a good thing to spend some time in Germany as she could learn to speak the language properly and gain an insight into the true atmosphere of the German opera world,” said Mrs Major. Miss Major Is expected to retui n to New Zealand in July to play the lead in the Hamilton Operatic Society’s production of “The Sound Of Music.”

“We expect that arrangements will be made for her

to go to Germany after her return to London,” said Mrs Major.
