HAIRDRESSING APPRENTICES

Institute Asked To Take Over

The Canterbury, Westland, Nelson, and Marlborough Ladies’ Hairdressers’ Association has asked the Christchurch Technical Institute to take over the training of apprentices. It wants the Department of Education to control training now given at a private hairdressing college in Christchurch. In a letter to the institute read at Monday night’s meeting of its board, the president of the association (Mr B. Jones) said there were about 280 hairdressing salons in his district with about 560 apprentices for training. About half this number were outside Christchurch and would be on correspondence training and be required to attend the training establishment for one week during the year for practical and theory examinations. About 280 apprentices from Christchurch could attend for instruction for three hours each week in lunch-time periods. Mr Jones said the owners of the private hairdressing college in Christchurch had agreed to a Department of Education take-over, subject to a satisfactory settlement and to their being retained as instructors.

The institute decided to investigate the proposal.

Notifiable Diseases.—One case of infective hepatitis and one case of meningococcal meningitis were reported during the week ended May 6 in the Christchurch health district Both were reported in Christchurch, the hepatitis in a woman in her seventies and the meningitis in a man in his forties.
